world insight to dentists, physicians and radiologists.
| Case Study: 3D Reconstruction |
 |
Case History:
Patient presented with a
complaint of pain around tooth #17. Clinical
diagnosis was pericoronitis. When panoramic x-ray
revealed a close association between the apices of
#17 and the mandibular canal (see Sedaghatfar M,
August MA, Dodson TB. Panoramic radiographic
findings as predictors of inferior alveolar nerve
exposure following third molar extraction. J Oral
Maxillofacial Surg. 2005 Jan;63(1):3-7), the oral
surgeon ordered a CT scan. From the CT it appeared
that the mandibular canal passed between the roots
of #17. The 3D reconstruction clearly shows this to
be the case.
Photo Description: Cross-sections, a
panoramic and 3D reconstruction of the area around
tooth #17 are presented.
Clinical Benefit: The patient can now
give truly informed consent on whether she wants to
risk removing #17, whether to try to pursue a form of
periodontal surgery, whether to undergo a
coronectomy or whether to “wait and see.”

Photo Description:
Patient is a 60 year old interested in a lower fixed
denture. Both implants in the picture were
associated with an abscess and one of them was
mobile. Regular x_rays showed proximity to the IAN to
get a better view of the area before attempting
removal the patient was referred to IVI (Orl) to get a
CT. With the help of the scan and Osseoview the
clinician was able to safely determine the true
correlation of the Implants to the abscess.

Photo Description:
This patient was imaged to assess the symmetry of
projection of his malar processes (cheekbones)
following surgical repair. The use of cone beam
technology allowed the clinician to assess the
symmetry of the correction and the maturation of the
healing process in the presence of the titanium
fixation plates without the scatter due to the
presence of the plate as seen in conventional CT
imaging. The clinician also gained information from
the straight on view of the skull and the head back
position.
